Over the past few weeks, Kabul has seen a stream of VIPs roll into town – Sen. John Kerry, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and now CentCom Commander General David Petraeus. I was lucky to get a few minutes with Gen. Petraeus Wednesday morning. Attached here is part of the interview that aired on the Fox Report with Shepard Smith.
For weeks, every security person I spoke with told me the same thing – the violence in Afghanistan is going to get worse as the election inches closer and Kabul won’t be spared.
Well today they were right! And I had a front row seat.
Around 4am, just as the call to prayer was echoing across [...]
For the past three months I’ve been living in a guest house in Shar-e-now, and while it was a great place – it was always a temporary home. I pretty much lived out of one of my two bags. The other just sat in the corner unopened. So I never really felt settled in.
But now [...]
I recently returned from Paktika Province after a one week trip with Scott Hiedler of Fox News. We were there to do a story on the Afghanistan/ Pakistan border – which as you can see from these photos is a vast and rugged area.
While we were hanging out at Camp Tillman, several of the soldiers [...]
I once spent $35.00 on a haircut in a shopping mall. Aside from the fact it was a particularly bad haircut, its always bothered me. Until that day, I don’t think I ever spent more than $12.00, and I know I never got a cut in a mall — other than a strip mall. In [...]
Now that I have a six month visa, I guess Kabul is home. Several people have inquired about my living arrangements and what exactly I do every day. So here is the skinny.
My home is in central Kabul and while I am not going to publish the name of the building for security reasons, here [...]
Apparently, it’s more difficult to exit Afghanistan than to enter. I had no problems landing in Afghanistan but after four weeks of fun, my visa was about to expire so I had to pop over to Dubai to renew it. Everyone said Dubai is a quick and easy place to renew – what no one [...]
The world is a small place – especially when it comes to the military and V.M.I.
On Wednesday, I was suppose to fly to Wardack Province with the U.S Military for a story. I’m not going to tell you too much about the subject because it’s a great story and it’s a slightly controversial topic. I [...]
My first two weeks here have been fantastic. The weather has been beautiful and I was in the process of writing a post about my guest house, the different types of yummy food I’ve eaten and the interesting people I’ve met. But after the violence of the past 72 hours its seems a bit inappropriate [...]
After a week of struggling without internet access, I went to Kabul’s only 5 star hotel Friday night to plug in. Just one year ago, Taliban gunmen stormed the the Serena Hotel – killing six and injuring six more. Today, it is one of the most heavily guarded buildings in Kabul and is now surrounded [...]
