Fox News cameraman Rich Harlow and I spent most of February in Helmand Province with the U.S. Marines. First at Camp Leatherneck, the main U.S. base in Helmand and then in Marjah where 10,000 or so U.S. Marines, Brits and Afghan soldiers are trying to remove the Taliban from the city.
It was both a great and very frustrating trip. But we managed to turn a few stories that seemed to be well received. This one focuses on the daily complexities of fighting a war while at the same time trying to limit civilian deaths. I can tell you despite the large number of civilian deaths during the fight for Marjah, the grunts of 3/6 Marines -which we were embedded with- were very disciplined and really did take to heart the two fold mission they were given: root out the Taliban and protect civilians.
I also seemed to have picked up at least one critic. JE Tabler of the Real News Blog seems to think I support terrorists because I was wearing a Keffiyeh -or Shemagh as a scarf is known in Afghanistan. Here is part of his post.

With winds at times hitting 40mph+, temperatures well below freezing at night, and dust and sand a constant problem many people wear Shemaghs in Afghanistan – particularly in the Helmand. Including many of the Marines.
US troops have been wearing them in Afghanistan, Iraq and the larger Middle East region for years. Last time I checked they don’t support terrorists either.
Over the past few weeks, Kabul has seen a stream of VIPs roll into town – Sen. John Kerry, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and now CentCom Commander General David Petraeus. I was lucky to get a few minutes with Gen. Petraeus Wednesday morning. Attached here is part of the [...]
With the Afghan election crisis worsening, former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Zalmay KhalilzadĀ arrived in Kabul Wednesday in hopes of resolving the election.
I’ve been watching John Stewart’s Daily Show for years – generally being part of his montages aren’t a good thing. So I am glad to escape unscathed.
My appearance comes at about the 1:50 mark. Don’t blink, it’s quick.
FoxNews.com is in the process of redesigning its website. A major part of the new site is an area called “Live Shots.”
Basically, the idea is get more breaking news and fresh information from reporters, producers and photogs in the field. Here is my first attempt.
Its very much a work in progress but it could end [...]
The 4th of July was almost as busy as the 2nd of July. Fortunately, the stories on the 4th were slightly more up lifting. My live shot on service members re-enlisting is here.
Thanks to Sam French for all his help.
For the past three months I’ve been living in a guest house in Shar-e-now, and while it was a great place – it was always a temporary home. I pretty much lived out of one of my two bags. The other just sat in the corner unopened. So I never really felt settled in.
But now [...]
I recently returned from Paktika Province after a one week trip with Scott Hiedler of Fox News. We were there to do a story on the Afghanistan/ Pakistan border – which as you can see from these photos is a vast and rugged area.
While we were hanging out at Camp Tillman, several of the soldiers [...]
